Big Tobacco’s Ventilation Hoax Big Tobacco has worked to undermine smokefree workplace laws by promoting
ineffective and misleading ventilation alternatives that are proven to be unable to
eliminate health risk due to secondhand smoke. The tobacco industry and their
allies want policymakers and the public to believe there is some solution to the
health hazard posed by secondhand smoke other than the implementation of
smokefree workplace laws. However, scientific and technical authorities, such as ASHRAE, the ventilation
standards-setting body, and even the manufacturers of ventilation systems
acknowledge that ventilation systems do not eliminate health risk due to secondhand
smoke exposure and the only way to remove the threat to health caused by secondhand
smoke is by making a facility completely smokefree. Aq Cotinine Studies [pdf] ASHRAE Position Statement [pdf] Fort Wayne Air Monitoring Study [pdf]
